Leadership Committee provides area non-profit organizations with grant writing workshop
Seats filled quickly when area non-profit organizations were given an opportunity to attend a reduced-price, two-day grant writing workshop hosted by the Keokuk Area Community Foundation in January and February, 2008. Approximately 24 organizations from Keokuk, Fort Madison, Donnellson, and Montrose, Iowa; Hamilton, Carthage and Quincy, Illinois learned in detail how to write a successful grant application.
L.T. Smith and Jill Smith, owners of LT & J Consulting, Iowa City, used power point, hand-out material and the Internet to take the organizations through the process detail by detail.
Jill Smith, a known grant writer in the Iowa City area, has more than 20 years experience in community government, nonprofit organizational development, strategic planning and grant writing. She has the inept ability to teach through the eyes of a grant reviewer.
L. T. Smith is a senior consultant with more than 25 years experience in business management and leadership development. He brings a broad base of experience to his consulting and training assignments.
Strategies, prioritizing, organizing and Internet web sites were just some of the points that the Smith’s discussed at length with the group.
One attendee, Mary Sue Chatfield of Montrose, commented, ““Yes, I thought it was good,” she said. “I never had any instruction, you just jump in. This told us more about the guidelines and stressed that if the grant asks for a certain font, use a certain font.”

LEADERSHIP KEOKUK-
A NEW BEGINNING
FOR OUR CITY?
The Leadership Committee of KACF was pleased to be the featured speaker at the September, 2007 Keokuk Chamber of Commerce RAP breakfast. Committee chair Dr. Wilson Davis, Jim Hankes and Susan Dunek presented exciting information regarding upcoming events for the Leadership Committee.
Following attendance by several board members at a seminar sponsored by the Iowa Secretary of State’s office, “Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence,” the Leadership Committee felt the commitment to provide local agencies with assistance in establishing 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, assist with board development, including recruitment, retention, orientation and board function. The Leadership committee will also provide support for those agencies in preparing strategic plans.
“We are currently in the planning stages of being able to put together several brown bag luncheon seminars to assist local nonprofit organizations on these endeavors. Stay tuned for updates; this is going to be fun,” stated Davis.
Another exciting announcement included bringing a grant writing seminar to Keokuk. Hankes stated, “Several workshop presenters are currently being interviewed to make this presentation shortly after the first of the year.”
